Biography and Legacy

Richard Michael Catapano Jr., affectionately known as Richie, was a man defined by laughter, love, and a profound commitment to his community. Born and raised in College Point, NY, and later moving to Farmingdale, Richie formed lifelong friendships and graduated from Farmingdale High School. His captivating blue eyes and infectious smile made him a beloved figure. After a brief stint at Con Edison, his true calling came in 2016 when he joined the NYPD, dedicatedly serving in the 73rd Precinct’s Anti-Crime team. Richie’s colleagues remember him for his unwavering commitment to removing illegal firearms from Brooklyn’s streets, compassion, and willingness to help others. Outside of his duties as an officer, Richie enjoyed family time and golfing, often with a playful twist. Tragically, Richie passed on August 2, 2020, highlighting the immense pressures faced by law enforcement. Despite the sorrow surrounding his death, his legacy of dedication, generosity, and joy lives on. Richie made a lasting impact on his community and is remembered as a devoted officer, cherished friend, and beloved family member. His story is a testament to the positive difference one individual can make through kindness, bravery, and a genuine love for life.

About the Event

Swinging for a Cause, One Hole at a Time

The Richard M. Catapano Jr. Memorial Golf Outing, established in 2021, has been highly successful in honoring the memory of Richard M. Catapano Jr. and raising awareness and funds for suicide prevention among first responders. The inaugural event, despite the challenges of the time, drew a remarkable turnout, setting the stage for what would become a significant annual tradition. Participants, including avid golfers, local supporters, and individuals passionate about the cause, gathered for a day filled with camaraderie and remembrance. The event featured golf, dinner, and auctions, successfully raising funds and awareness for the critical issue of first responder suicide prevention. The following year, the outing saw increased participation and support, with more sponsors and deeper community involvement. Activities expanded to include a cocktail hour and competitive golfing challenges like the longest drive and closest to the pin contests, furthering outreach programs and support services for first responders. By 2023, the event had become a much-anticipated tradition, with golf slots selling out quickly. New features such as door prizes and enhanced sponsorship opportunities allowed for more excellent fundraising, expanding the support network for first responders. The 2024 outing reached a new milestone, with the golf portion sold out well in advance. The focus extended beyond golf to include a well-curated dinner, cocktail hour, and a range of sponsorship options, all of which reflected the community’s unwavering dedication to the cause. Proceeds continued to support suicide awareness initiatives, reinforcing the mission of aiding first responders in need. Over the years, the Richard M. Catapano Jr. Memorial Golf Outing has grown significantly, becoming a vital event for raising awareness and funds, honoring Richard M. Catapano Jr.’s legacy, and making a meaningful impact on many lives.
